The Hungry Puffin Who Couldn't Catch Any Fish

Writer's picture: jjacquirjjacquir

The hungry puffin couldn't catch any fish - he'd tried all day, but still had an empty dish. When he went to the supermarket, all the fish were sold. The hungry puffin swam through the sea, trying to catch some fish for his tea - all he caught was a cold. He wanted to see what kind of dinner he could make, so he bobbed about in the lake. He asked an eskimo to help him catch a trout, but the eskimo refused saying he was about to go out. The eskimo went to get a spare fishing rod from his igloo - he offered it to the puffin, telling him what to do. Soon, the puffin met a whale, who told the puffin a trick that wouldn't fail. But the puffin soon realised if he was about to set sail, what he really needed was a huffing, puffing gale. The whale said the puffin should buy a ship, big enough for a round - the - world fishing trip. Very soon, on the sea breeze, the puffin felt an atishoo - ing sneeze. Of course, the puffin had caught a cold. He slipped on ice, dropped his rod, it was so hard to hold. Very soon, he'd bumped into a rock and still the puffin hadn't found a place to dock. The hungry puffin then tried a net, he'd hoped to be soon catching fish yet, I bet. But all he got were some cockles and shells and still he wasn't feeling very well. The hungry puffin tried some more and picked up a starfish swimming on the sea floor. Three cod quickly swam away, when they saw the puffin was fishing today. Even the shark was scared to play. The hungry puffin flapped his wings, he hoped to fish for salt and vinegary things. He still didn't have a single fish for his plate - he would like a plaice but decided to settle for skate. As the puffin became hungrier still, he waved his tail and pecked his bill. The hungry puffin saw seaweed ... but it wasn't the usual kind of food he'd feed. He'd hoped for fish and chips as a treat - but his net was empty, he still had nothing to eat. The hungry puffin pecked a worm on the end of rod at last, just about beating a cod racing past. But it was hardly enough, to fill the puffin used to eating fish and stuff. Then the hungry puffin tried to trawl for crabs - but he was left hungry - there were few fish up for grabs. He followed a duck who was wading by ... and asked him to show him where the best fish were to fry. A few prawns came to give him a hand ... and showed the puffin the best place to land in the sand. The lobster came with his bucket and spade and showed the puffin the sandcastles he'd made. The hungry puffin looked in a rockpool - though he didn't expect to find a single fish there, as a rule. Although, he was used to swimming fishing galas - he might not as well set the table in the parlour. He didn't have neither an oyster or a hake - what kind of puffin dinner would that make ? The hungry puffin had nothing to chew - a simple whelk or a lobster would do for a fish stew. He looked about in the rockpools, but there were few.
