The Christmas when Santa tried his hand at golf turned into one great big snowball fight. Santa scared off the reindeer with his golf club, who, on the first shot, ran away in fright. With all the might that Santa had got, he started putting shots rather a lot (even though none of them hit the right spot !). Naturally, his first and second shots were quite bad. In fact, on the third shot, Santa snapped the golf club, he got so mad. It was the most rolling Christmas that the grotto had ever had ! Santa's fifth shot missed, of course, and his sixth shot veered off course. Gradually, his shots became even worse ! His seventh shot cracked a plate. His eighth shot broke the grandfather clock, so Christmas was late ! When Santa hit a four, a hole was created in the floor. The Christmas fairy didn't duck, so she was the first one in the grotto to get struck ! Before long, all the fairy lights in the hall became unstuck ! Whose idea was it, to buy Santa golf clubs and a set of tees ?!", asked the gnome, as a golfball flew past one the breeze. "BASH !", a window smashed, as another golf ball crashed. Mrs. Christmas in the kitchen, found a golf tee in her stitching. As it picked up dust, the golf ball was soon, the size of a Christmas pud, which bounced off the table and fell into the mud. When they heard the snowball "ZING !", someone thought that a thunderstorm was approaching. The golf ball that Santa shot, rolled out of the door and hit a flower pot. It bounced off the garden shed and gathered snow from the flower bed, instead. Gradually, as it headed down the hill, the snowball grew, until it was the size of the windowsill. After a week, it was as big as the house, so Santa used it as a step ladder to the chimney pot, to deliver a present to the attic mouse (though he wasn't sure if he was in or not !). Then, Santa used the giant golf ball to slide back down and deliver his presents all over town.

The Golf Maths Course

Write a mathematical equation to show your working out to the following maths problem.

1. In his first attempt at golf, Santa successfully hit only one in four of the first twenty golf shots - the rest he missed. Of the remaining golf balls, 20% were lost in the sand dunes. Half of the remaining balls were lost in the river so that leaves how many golf balls that could be shot ?

2. In his second attempt at golf, Santa 0.5 of the ten golf balls hit by Santa made it passed the fifth hole. Then one ball got lost on every third hole. If eventually only one ball was hit, how many flags were there on the golf course ?

3. The giant snowball increased by 400%. If the golf ball originally weighed 250 g, how big was it after it gathered snow ? Give your answer in g and kg.

Santa's Golf Points Score - Hit or Miss ?

Which of the following mathematical sums is a hit or miss ? (i.e. which does Santa get right ?)

1. 25 x 4 = 125

2. 500 / 4 = 125

3. 30 + 95 = 125

4. 150 - 25 = 125

5. 725 / 5 = 125

6. 500 - 375 = 125

7. 80 + 35 = 125

8. 25 x 5 = 125

9. 145 - 5 = 125 1

10. 1000 / 8 = 125
