Gerome, the gnome, who lived in Santa's grotto had stockings that were really quite shocking. The knit unravelled and a hole in Santa's sock quickly grew. As one by one the stitches became undone in rows, out poked one of Santa's size nine toes. When his feet got rather cold, Santa jumped up and down on the spot. Naturally, then you could even see, what colour nail varnish that he'd got ! All around the knees, Santa's stockings were wrinkly. Although he spent an hour ironing them, they still remained incredibly crinkly. Gerome washed them regularly and hung them outside to dry - but the stockings dripped so much, the snowman confused it with rain from the Winter sky. On the washing line, Gerome thought his stockings would get a blow, but the heels only became more soggy in the Winter snow. Soon, the stockings were so damp, Gerome looked like a scruffy tramp ! Gerome the gnome's frustration gradually increased, when he put on his Wellington boots and gave them a coating of grease. Drip ! Drip ! Drip ! Icicles started to form and even more water dripped. A puddle formed on the garden path and in his loose stockings, Gerome accidentally flipped and slipped. Santa feared the pair would never be on time, if they had to trip all around the world before tomorrow, by half past nine. Gerome the gnome put his stockings on Santa's radiator, to see if they would air. Along came a reindeer with a very bad cold - when he sneezed, he scattered washing everywhere ! Now that Gerome had lost some of the stockings, he'd never have a pair ! Gerome the Gnome got angry, he really was quite mad. He had to travel with presents to Antarctica, but a pair of soggy stockings were the only thing to put on that he had ! As Christmas Eve was fast drawing near ... Gerome still had nothing on his feet to wear. Then the Christmas fairy had a great idea ... perhaps Germome should hang them by the fireplace, next to Santa's bottle of beer. It was Santa's slippers warming by the fireside, that made Gerome think that here his stockings would soon be dried before Santa's yearly sleigh ride. Actually that is where the tradition started, drying out Santa and the gnome's stockings, before off to the South Pole they departed !. Writing In The Snow Although Gerome the gnome's stockings were now quite clean and dry, they still wouldn't stay up and slipped down to his ankles ! Complete the story - what might Gerome do ? what might his other friends in the grotto, the Christmas fairy, the reindeers, the toymaker elves, the Snowman, Mrs Christmas and Santa himself suggest ? Remember, he still might have a few chimneys to climb with Santa, before he could go home to rest !
