Echo the freckled Gecko was so freckled he echoed. "Oh heck !", he cried, as he changed colour and multiplied. He couldn't get his sums to add, so he used his spots, which wasn't that bad.

For a lizard, he was a maths wizard. But he couldn't subtract or divide, being so well camoflagued, his numbers always went to hide. It's a good job that he wasn't colour blind, because the answers to his sums would have become even more hard to find !

The alligator said he'd better leave counting his spots till later, once he'd found his calculator ! Seeing his spots, the zebra thought that he had measles or mumps. He was so dotty, he crashed into stumps ! No wonder the jungle economy slumped and the tree - house prices were guzzumped ! The camel said he'd like spots like that on his humps and asked the gecko where he got his bumps !

The gecko changed his colour so many times, that he crossed the wrong way on a zebra crossing, when he didn't spot the signs ! Echo the freckled gecko bought some paint and a brush ... he decided he'd like to change colour again - so he might as well paint the bush ! Before long, the entire jungle was multi - coloured (as well as some of the animals !).

The tiger was blue with purple stripes instead orange - the black panther was pink and the golden eagle was red. Oh what a hullaballoo ! when the freckled gecko made everything in the zoo blue, too !

Write a mathematical equation to show your working out to the following maths problems.

1. On his tail, Echo the freckled gecko had 12 spots, on his body 25 spots and 15 on his head. How many spots is that in total ?

2. Echo the freckled gecko had four feet and there were 10 spots foot - how many spots is that in total ?

3. If Echo the freckled gecko changed colour once every five minutes, how often is that in one hour ?

4. Echo the freckled gecko was blue for 10 minutes, red for 20 minutes, green for 30 minutes and blue for 40 minutes.

a) Express this as a ratio.

b) What fraction of the total time was he blue ?

c) What decimal of the total time was he red ?

d) What percentage of the total time was he green ?

5. If 20% of Echo the freckled gecko's 300 spots were blue - how many is that ?

6. If 10% of Echo the freckled gecko's 200 spots were red - how many is that ?

7. If 30% of Echo the freckled gecko's 400 spots were purple - how many is that ?

8. If 40% of Echo the freckled gecko's 500 spots were black - how many is that ?

9. If 60% of Echo the freckled gecko's 600 spots were blue - how many is that ?

10. If 50% of Echo the freckled gecko's 700 spots were blue - how many is that ?

11. Echo the freckled gecko caught 20 flies every 15 minutes - how many flies is that in one hour ?

12. Echo the freckled gecko ate 0.7 of the 150 flies he caught, how many is that ?

13. Echo the freckled gecko met 200 other jungle animals. One fifths of them were also striped, three fifths were spotted and the rest were plain.

a) How many i ) striped ii) spotted iii) plain animals were there ?

b) Express this as a ratio.

c) What percentage of the total number of animals were spotted ?

d) What decimal of the total number of animals were striped ?

14. Echo the freckled gecko was one - twentieth of the size of the camel. If the camel measured 3.25 m high, how big was the gecko ?

15. Echo the freckled gecko had one eighth of the numbers of spots of the jungle leopard. If the leopard had 180 spots, how many spots did the freckled gecko have ?

Echo's Animal Crackers Encyclopaedia

Design your very own jungle book. Think of as many animals as you can with a colour in their name. Write a list and paint a picture of each.

How many other animals in the jungle can you think of that are also spotted ?

Answers :

1. 12 + 25 + 15 = 52

2. 4 x 10 = 40

3. 12

4. a) 1 : 2 : 3 : 4

b) 10 / 100 mins = 1 / 10 th

c) 20 / 100 = 1/ 5 = 0.2

d) 30 / 100 = 3 / 10 = 30%

5. 300 / 100 x 20 = 60

6. 20

7. 120

8. 200

9. 360

10. 350

11. 20 x 4 = 80

12. 150 / 10 x 7 = 105

13. a) i) 40 ii) 120 iii) 40 ; b) spots : stripes : plain = 1 : 3 : 1 c) 60% d) 0.2

14. 325 / 20 = 16.25 cm

15. 180 / 8 = 22.5
