6/ Count Dracu spent 15 minutes in the shower. Every minute ran 2.5 mls of cold water and 3 mls of hot water. How much cold and hot water ran ? Express the proportion of cold and hot water as a ratio of the total amount of water. What fraction of the total amount of water was cold ? What percentage of the total amount of water was hot ?
7/ When Count Dracu made dinner, he cooked potatoes for 3 times as long as he boiled rice. He boiled rice 5 times longer than he fried onions and he fried onions for six times as long as he boiled milk for tea. Answers : 1/ 3.5 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 42 minutes 2/ 20 + 15 + 5 + 10 = 50 minutes 3/ a) 15 : (15 + 15 + 10 + 5 = 55) 3 : 11 b) 15 / 55 = 3 / 11 ths c) 10 / 55 = 18.2 % (to solve this problem, calculate how many 55's are in 100 (per cent) by process of elimination - then multiply the top figure) d) 0.182 4/ (3 x 10) + (2 x 10) + (4 x 15) = 30 + 20 + 60 = 100 minutes / 60 = 1.6 hours 5/ (3 x 4 x 3) : (5 x 4 x 3) = 36 : 60 = 3 / 5ths 6/ a) 2.5 + 3 x 15 = 330 b) cold : hot : total amount of water = (2.5 x 15) : (3 x 15) : (2.5 + 3 x 15) = 37.5 : 45 : 330 mls c) 2.5 x 15 / 3.15 x 15 = 37.5 / 47.25 d) To find this answer, find out what 330 mls would be as 100 %. ie make 330 denominator into 100 by / 7.3. Then the numerator on top of the fraction also gets divided by the same amount. (3 x 15) / (2.5 + 3 x 15) = 45 / 330 = 6.16 % 7/ 3.5x 6 x 5 x 3 = 315 minutes / 60 = 0.51 hours 8/ 15 x 4 = 60 / 5 x 4 = 48 9/ 20 - (9.99 + (2 x 1.25 = 2.50) = 20 - (9.99 + 2.50) = 20 - 12.49 = £7.51 10/ a) 8.10 b) 9.35 c) 10.40 d) 11.55
